Early Settlers and the Founding of Grayslake
The first settlers in the area were Native Americans who lived in wigwams along the shores of Grayslake. The Potawatomi and Ottawa tribes were the most common, but there were also Miami, Sauk, and Fox tribes in the area. The first white settlers arrived in the 1830s when a group of pioneers from New York state came to the area to start a farm.
Grayslake and the Military
Grayslake has a long history of military service. During the Civil War, many Grayslake residents served in the Union Army. Grayside High School was the town's first high school. It was opened in 1946 and has served the community for over 70 years. After World War I, however, the use of German at the school declined, and it was eventually dropped altogether.
