Algonquin, Illinois, is a village in the McHenry and Kane counties, located approximately 40 miles northwest of Chicago. The current population data, according to the United States Census Bureau, shows that there are more than 30,848 people that live here.

First Settler in 1834
Pottawatomi Indians were the original residents of Algonquin until the first settler, Samuel Gillilan, arrived in 1834. Gillilan built a log cabin along the Fox River, which is now known as Algonquin Road. This opened doors for more settlers to move into the area, which subsequently led to the building of stores, mills, and schools.
Factories and industries sprang up along the river, employing hundreds of residents, and the resulting jobs drew even more European settlers to Algonquin. After the collapse of communism in the East, other groups, including Czechs, Slovaks, Ukrainians, and Belarusians, also moved here. Consequently, Algonquin has now become one of the most ethnically-diverse suburbs of Chicago.
Historic Preservation
There are many historic preservation sites in Algonquin. These feature many different home styles from the Victorian era as well as beautiful parks and gardens. You can also find old preserves along the Fox River.

How Big is Algonquin?
Algonquin covers about 31.96 square kilometers of land. This place is slightly larger than Lake in the Hills, which covers about 27.04 square kilometers. As mentioned earlier, the population of Algonquin is just slightly more than 30,000 people, making it a great place to live with a small-town feel yet still providing many of the amenities of a larger city.
