When it comes time to choose a real estate agent, many people automatically assume that the most experienced agent is the best one to go with - but this isn't always the case. There are a few other factors you should take into account when making this decision. In this post, we help you pick a realtor by looking beyond their experience.
You should ask your prospective realtors about their field experience, and what they specialize in. Also, inquire about how many homes like yours they've sold within the last year and if there are any special circumstances you should be aware of regarding your home sale.
In addition to interviewing agents, also check their credentials. All realtors in the United States must be licensed, but not all licenses are created equal. The National Association of Realtors (NAR) offers many designations that realtors can earn such as: Seller Representative Specialist (SRS), Real Estate Negotiation Expert (RENE) and the Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR).
All three designations require that the Realtor complete advanced training and demonstrate outstanding performance in the field, so it’s a sign of high quality. An ABR is a realtor also focuses on representing buyers. Some agents may have only one designation, while others will have a record of continuing education and will strive to achieve higher results by adding more education and designations to their portfolio.
Checking online reviews can give you a good idea of what others think about an agent’s quality. The best resources for this are Google Reviews and Zillow, though you may also be able to find some Facebook comments from past customers if the realtor has their own business page.
Negative reviews could be a red flag, but you shouldn’t take positive ones as gospel either. Look for common themes in online reviews and testimonials that reflect your needs as a buyer or seller.
The most important thing is to find an agent who has a good reputation and lots of experience. An experienced realtor will have the knowledge and skills necessary to get the job done right, and they’ll also have your best interests at heart.
